Tensions heat up between Bangladesh, Myanmar over Rohingya

The government of Buddhist-majority Myanmar rejects such accusations, saying it is targeting "terrorists". Refugee witnesses have also told of stampedes. In Cox's Bazar, where there are concentrations of refugees, the camps of fortune now extend to loss of sight.

"We have set up 27 check posts in Bandarban, Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Chittagong districts to contain the spread".

According to the United Nations almost 400,000 Rohingya have arrived in Bangladesh since August 25 after fleeing a military crackdown launched by Myanmar's military in response to attacks by Rohingya rebels.

Backing up the pictures, Amnesty said fire sensors also deployed on satellites had detected 80 large-scale blazes across northern Rakhine state since August 25, when the army launched "clearance operations" in response to attacks by Rohingya militants.

Bangladesh is protesting a violation of its airspace by helicopters and drones from Myanmar, as tensions between the two countries escalate over a massive influx of Rohingya Muslim refugees into Bangladesh.

Police have already detained Rohingyas in Chittagong's Patenga, Chandgaon, Bakolia, Hathazari and Sitakunda areas and sent them back to Cox's Bazar.

"They can not travel from one place to another by roads, railways or waterways", the order said, adding bus and lorry drivers and workers have been asked not to carry the Rohingya.

Myanmar rejects the accusations, saying its security forces are carrying out clearance operations to defend against the insurgents of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, which claimed responsibility for the August 25 attacks and similar, though smaller, attacks in October.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Friday that the number of Rohingya refugees who have fled across the border to Bangladesh has climbed to 391,000. While the extent of damage could not be verified, due to access restrictions by the government, "they are likely to have burned down whole villages".

The Rohingya are a minority group largely based in Rakhine.

It said it also had credible reports of Rohingya militants burning the homes of ethnic Rakhine and other minorities.

The violence has mounted worldwide pressure on Myanmar's military leaders and civilian administration, led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

The generals still control national security policy but nevertheless, Suu Kyi has been widely criticised overseas for not stopping or condemning the violence.
