Jason Day hits hole-in-one, donates BMW to charity — BMW Championship

MARC Leishman is leading the BMW Championship after two rounds, but it was the exploits of fellow Australian Jason Day that stole the headlines at Conway Farms in Chicago. Should be in for a great afternoon at Conway Farms.

Because of Day's ace at the 17th, the tournament sponsor will donate $US100,000 to the Evans Scholar foundation which provides college scholarships to caddies.

Day is sponsored by Lexus.

"Actually quite a lot that day, probably three, four holes which is not normal for me".

Ask any pro, or even your typical weekend hacker, and you'll hear a familiar refrain: when the game is clicking, it feels like the birdies will never stop.

Day began the year at No. 1 in the world with a goal of staying there all the way through December.

How does the FedEx Cup work?

Thomas also carded a 70 that left him in a group on 137 while Johnson closed with back-to-back bogeys in a 72 that left him languishing on one-over 143.

Former world number one Day sacked his caddy Colin Swanton earlier in the week, though Swanton remains on as his coach, and has seen an immediate upswing in performance with stand-in Luke Reardon on his bag.

"It's very quick down there so I just wanted to get something just landing on the green", he said.

One of those eagles was a chip-in from 30 feet from beyond the green at the par-five 14th.

Day was brilliant on the ace, he smacked the shot with an iron. The ball landed in rough just short of the green, hopped out and rolled into the cup.

"The course was playing tough and I didn't play as well as I would have liked". Probably landed at maybe 181 yards. I just know that I kind of need to focus on what I have done.

The Northern Irishman needs a top-four finish in the BMW Championship in order to secure a place in next week's final play-off event, the Tour Championship, and keep alive his hopes of retaining the title he won 12 months ago.

"It's more of a grind", he said.

Rory McIlroy, requiring a top-five finish to have any chance of progressing to the season-ending Tour Championship, sits tied-50th following a two-under 69.

"Confidence is high and hopefully I can just ride the wave", Leishman told reporters.
