Poverty in America: Search cities with worst poverty rates (database)

Because this is the second straight year that there was a decline in the poverty rate, this new data suggests that Americans were actually in a position of increasing financial strength before Trump took office.

Government experts define poverty as an income under $24,563 for a family of four. For everyone, the best gains went to full-time workers. "And having so many residents lacking basic economic security is a huge drag on New Jersey's economy and quality of life".

How can this be?

More detailed income data about immigrants and Indigenous Peoples, both on and off-reserve, is scheduled for release next month.

The census determines poverty based on income and family size. This happened a lot in 2016, as a strong labor market made room for more than 2 million additional full-time workers. "If we stay on that trajectory, I feel good about where our community's future lies".

The numbers reflect one of the longest economic expansions in U.S. history, with more than six years of steady job growth.

Consider the distribution of winners and losers. That rise in product quality from competing companies - not claimed policy improvements from federal agencies - has provided the vast majority of material gains for Americans amid flat incomes. The report says just over 10 percent of Asian Americans live in poverty.

"The growing wedge between median and mean household incomes is a key way that rising inequality has manifested in recent decades, " said Josh Bivens, director of research at the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute.

These findings are contained in two reports: Income and Poverty in the United States: 2016 and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2016.

But there was also sobering news on poverty in Tuesday's report. On its face, that might seem like a long-overdue step in the march toward equal pay in the often-unequal American workplace. It's not because women's earnings increased substantially in 2016. The differences between the 2015 to 2016 percentage changes in median income for family and non-family households was not statistically significant.

The problem of stagnant earnings persists, especially for men. That's been the story since at least 2007.

The earnings gap between men and women shrank for the first time since 2007; women earned 80.5 cents for every dollar earned by men, on average, compared with 79.6 cents in 2015.

Women earned 80% of male pay on average past year, up almost a percentage point and the first statistically significant increase since 2007.

It's important not to get carried away by the dark clouds, here. "But that can vary from region to region within the state, and wage gaps driven by gender and race persist in Texas, as they do in the rest of country". That didn't quite happen in 2016.

Nationwide, black households saw the most pronounced increase in median household income previous year, at 5.7 percent ($39,490).

All of those guesses are wrong, according to the latest 2016 income data released by the U.S. Census. In half the country's opposite-sex couples, men earned more than women, compared with 71.3 per cent in 1985.
