White House lays out case that Comey broke the law

"Those are real reasons for why he was sacked", Sanders said, once again defending President Donald Trump's decision to abruptly terminate Comey, a move that special counsel Robert Mueller may be investigating as part of his probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Comey has said Trump asked him to end an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn and had also asked him over dinner to pledge his loyalty to him. Critics have contended that the President may have been trying to interfere with Comey's criminal investigation into potential Russian Federation collusion with the Trump campaign, something the White House has furiously denied.

The Senate judiciary committee revealed in an August 31 press release that Comey began drafting a letter in April or May of 2016 to exonerate former secretary of state Hillary Clinton of charges in her email investigation-which was "before the FBI interviewed up to 17 key witnesses including former Secretary Clinton and several of her closest aides".

"He went outside of the chain of command and politicized an investigation into a presidential candidate".

"I think that it has been shown in the days that followed that the president was right in firing Director Comey since the director's firing, we've learned new information that only provided further justification for that firing, including giving false testimony, leaking privileged information to journalists", Sanders said at the time. "His actions were improper and likely could have been illegal". "That's the job of the Department of Justice, and something they should certainly look at", Sanders said.

The finding appears to run contrary to Comey's own testimony.

In a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Grassley and Feinstein said investigators would "limit the scope" of their questions to avoid the pending Mueller investigation and instead focus primarily on "independent recollections, as fact witnesses, of events that occurred before and including Director Comey's removal". The committee heard privately last week from Donald Trump Jr. about a June 2016 meeting involving a Russian lawyer and an offer to provide damaging information about his father's opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Axios reported that Sanders's words are part of a larger campaign to not only discredit Comey.

"That's not up to me decide", Sanders said.

"No. As I told Hallie, this is anybody that breaks the law. If they determine that that's the course of action to take, then they should certainly do that".

A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request to comment on whether the department feels Comey should be prosecuted or if the White House has recommended he should be.
