JJ Abrams takes over as director on 'Star Wars: Episode IX'

Naturally, there is always a chance that another director who hasn't worked with Kennedy or on a Star Wars project will be brought on.

Oh, and then went on to work on roughly 4,000 major pop-culture things, including the series-redeeming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Abrams, the co-creator of ABC's "Lost", director of the recent "Star Trek" relaunch and master of the lens flare, will also co-write the unnamed "Star Wars: Episode IX" with Chris Terrio.

Director Rian Johnson has made it clear that he has no intentions to helm "Episode IX" of the "Star Wars" franchise.

One of the possible replacements who is high on the list is Rian Johnson, who directed the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" - which will come out later in the year.

"It was a wonderful way to visit a place that meant so much to me and obviously so many", Abrams said, referring to his well-known love of the franchise. "Whoever does it, I'm going to be really excited to be an audience member again. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm", a statement read. J.J. Abrams has been confirmed to handle both writing and directing Star Wars: Episode IX. The official Star Wars Twitter account announced JJ Abrams will write and direct the next installment of the third Star Wars trilogy. Now, just after that news broke, it has been revealed that the studio has chose to bump back the release date for Star Wars 9.

"Episode IX" is slated to arrive in May 2019.

In a statement issued by Disney, creative differences were cited as the reason behind Trevorrow's departure. "We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon". Still, if The Last Jedi turns out to be well-received by critics and fans, expect a number of them to wonder why Johnson couldn't just finish off this trilogy too.
