Trump has appointed a new managing NASA

President Donald Trump announced today that he intends to nominate Oklahoma Representative Jim Bridenstine as NASA's next Administrator.

Bridenstine represents Oklahoma's First Congressional District, where he was first elected in 2012.

While in the House, Bridenstine has shown a real interest in space, particularly with getting private companies more involved with NASA.

"It's the one federal mission which has largely been free of politics and it's at a critical juncture in its history".

Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told Politico, "I just think it could be devastating for the space program".

Rubio continued that he would have to see the nomination held up over "partisanship, political arguments, past votes, or statements made in the past - because the agency can't afford it and it can't afford the controversy".

And here's Bridenstine in 2013 demanding that then-President Obama apologize for spending money to research climate change, which he says has "stopped" and severe weather is on the decline anyway. Nelson's office did not respond to a request for comment September 2 about the nomination. By contrast current NASA head Charles Frank Bolden, Jr.is a former Administrator of NASA, a retired United States Marine Corps Major General, and a former NASA astronaut.

As Trump's nomination noted, after serving in the Navy, Bridenstine was the executive director of the Tulsa Air and Space Museum & Planetarium, so he's pretty caught up with his space studies and lunar terminology.

If confirmed by by the Senate, he will replace acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot, who has run the agency since Trump took office in January. "NASA needs dedicated and inspired leadership, and Rep. Bridenstine is an outstanding choice to provide precisely that", said Alan Stern, chairman of the board. "Bridenstine's lifelong passion for space, combined with his work in Congress on modernizing our nation's space program, will serve him well at NASA".

"Of course, the nomination must go through the Senate confirmation process, but I look forward to ensuring a smooth transition and sharing the great work the NASA team is doing", said Lightfoot.
