4 million personal records of Time Warner cable customers exposed

The other breach was uncovered by technology news website Gizmodo, which found information on sensitive government workers employed by security company TigerSwan.
The breach was eventually linked to BroadSoft Inc, a communications company that partners with service providers, including AT&T (NYSE:) and TWC, Gizmodosaid.
The TWC record information was not unique for all details exposed, instances of duplicate information, were also seen, meaning the breach ultimately exposed less than four million customers. While it's unlikely that multiple BroadSoft customers have anything to worry about, this incident will undermine confidence in the unified comms specialist and make potential suitors wary about potential security breaches that could, in the future, lead to legal action and compensation claims.
The records went far as back as November 2010, predating Charter's 2016 acquisition of Time Warner Cable for US$78.7 billion, including assumed debt. There were also some internal company records like credentials for external systems, internal emails, and SQL database dumps.
"Even if companies realise they've accidentally published sensitive data via Amazon and locked up their data buckets, there is always the risk that Google has already indexed and cached the information", Mr Cluley said.
A spokesperson for BroadSoft said the company had verified that customer data was exposed to the public internet, but it does not believe the information to be "highly sensitive".
TWC, which was acquired by Charter Communications a year ago and is now called Spectrum, said the data related to users of the MyTWC mobile application used to remotely manage accounts, which was developed by BroadSoft. One of the repositories was secured nearly immediately following the email warning, despite claims by an India-based BroadSoft engineer (in an email response to Kromtech) that the repository had nothing to do with the cloud-based unified comms specialist.
Charter Communications, the parent company of Time Warner Cable, said users' financial information had not been exposed and the data largely concerned former or "legacy" customers.
The information was removed immediately after the discovery and the incident is being investigated, Charter said.
"We encourage customers who used the MyTWC app to change their user names and passwords", Charter stated. Protecting customer privacy is of the utmost importance to us.
BroadSoft has hundreds of network operator customers, all of which will be wondering if any of their data is being held in exposed databases.
