Bill Belichick explains trade of Jacoby Brissett for Phillip Dorsett

That changed just eight days before the start of the regular season. Indianapolis traded former first round pick wide receiver Phillip Dorsett to the New England Patriots, in exchange for quarerback Jacoby Brissett. It was only after the fourth preseason game, 10 days before the season opener, that Colts owner Jim Irsay admitted to Indianapolis beat reporters that Luck "most likely" would not be ready for the September 10 season opener against the Rams.

The Colts answered it when they elevated Luck to the active roster from PUP later Saturday afternoon.

All along, Brissett seemed like a safe candidate to make the roster unless another team proposed a trade to the Patriots. The Colts took Dorsett in the first round two years ago and he's been a major disappointment. With the loss of Cyrus Jones to an ACL tear, the newcomer is likely to receive a crash course in the return game before Thursday's opener against Kansas City.

For the Colts, it casts doubts about QB Andrew Luck's health and when he might be ready to return to the field.

Brissett, a third-round draft pick in 2016, boosted his stock last season when he went 1-1 in two starts during Brady's four-game "Deflategate" suspension. We're going to see where he's at. Morris was consistent throughout the preseason, throwing for 399 yards and completing almost 68 percent of his pass attempts. Behind him is Jimmy Garoppolo, a young quarterback who was subject to trade rumors but not moved because the Patriots insist he's the future for the team.

Brissett finished his rookie season having completed 34 of 55 passes for 400 yards while rushing for 83 yards and the one touchdown on 16 carries in three games.

Here's what the team's official website noted about Brissett, who did have a big game in a showcase appearance during the Patriots' final preseason game. Brissett was 28 of 39 for 341 yards, three touchdowns and interception.

Now, it's worth pointing out that Brissett did okay past year when pressed into emergency duties for the Patriots.
