US Open: Karolina Pliskova battles past qualifier Nicole Gibbs

"It's quite normal to have this, and I would prefer to have on the top and have these kind of expectations than be somewhere out of top 20 or something and - to don't have that", Svitolina said.

Pliskova then dismissed three break points in her next service game to hold for 6-5.

She also managed to get 62 percent of her first serves in, and won 46 percent of her receiving points, giving her a strong 6-3 set opener. "I felt like I was prepared, I just couldn't bring it".

The 25-year old beat Gibbs 2-6 6-3 6-4 to reach the third round.

"I think I obviously came out really well in the first set", Gibbs said". Even when I was playing some matches last year, two years before, I still have some nerves in myself.

Defending women's champion Angelique Kerber of Germany and 2009 men's champion Juan Martin del Potro are also on the schedule, with rain in the forecast for later in the day.

The Czech, who reached the final at Flushing Meadows previous year, was on the back foot against Gibbs before finding her range on serve.

Also advancing were No. 33 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, a straight-sets victor over Australian John Millman, and Alexandr Dolgopolov, who routed Viktor Troicki 6-1, 6-0, 6-4.

Pliskova faced match point at 5-4 in in the second set, but Zhang committed a backhand error and the tall Czech went on to win the game and the second set. Who will win the US Open titles this year?

Pliskova, who went to the top of the rankings after Wimbledon, was outplayed for much of the first set.

She remains in contention for the number one ranking along with four other women.

It was clear that Pliskova would have to raise her level to pull through this match, and she began to do that in the second set.

Pliskova will now move on to face the victor of the third round match between unseeded players Jennifer Brady and Monica Niculescu.

The runner-up last year needs to at least return to the final for a chance to remain atop the rankings when the year's final major tournament is over, and it appeared for a while that the Czech wouldn't get close.

The top-ranked Nadal faces Japan's Taro Daniel in the second night match at Ashe.

"But I'm winning, so that's the main thing". The five-time U.S. Open champion has won all 12 meetings but hasn't played his top tennis yet in this tournament.

A five-time title victor in 2017 after claiming the Rogers Cup three weeks ago, Svitolina reached the third round for the third consecutive year.
