US Open: Nadal beats Lajovic in straight sets

Top seed Rafael Nadal beat Serbia's Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 6-2, before American 15th seed Madison Keys opened the night session with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory over Belgian Elise Mertens.

As it rained a good part of the day Tuesday, the roof was closed and the public new yorker has been true to its reputation. That is why both at Wimbledon 2009 and the US Open the fifth seed was moved.

The throne at US Open is empty, and we are sure that many participants are going to give their best now in order to reach it. His level of play dipped considerably over the last two sets Thursday as he appeared to be restricted by a leg cramp.

Next up for the 31-year-old is a third round match against aggressive Argentinian Leonardo Mayer.

Any nerves were soon eased when Federer threw in four unforced errors in the opening game, including two backhands off the frame, to drop serve.

Even though the U.S. Tennis Association tried to lessen the noise in Arthur Ashe Stadium after the retractable cover's debut during last year's tournament, there was still quite a bit of ambient sound when the top was shut because of rain Tuesday.

And, for just the fourth time in his illustrious career, the 19-time grand slam champion was pushed to five sets in the first round of a major.

By the start of the third set, Federer was playing much more like his 2017 self but, just when it seemed he was about to coast to victory, Tiafoe roared back.

Roger Federer is trailing two sets to one against Mikhail Youzhny in the U.S. Open's second round. Nadal came through 7-6 6-2 6-2 but will be looking for a faster start against Daniel.

"Tough beginning of the match", he said. The match is being assessed but is not yet under formal investigation, Harrison said.

But the Bulgarian made a second-round exit, losing to 19-year-old Rublev 7-5 7-6 (7-3) 6-3. The first round is never easy.

However, after squeezing through a gripping first set tie break, he began to strike the ball with devastating force.

Against Rublev, Dimitrov double-faulted 11 times and converted only 2 of 10 break points. Paul looked to be continuing that fine run when he took a two sets to one lead, but the Japanese, who was born in NY, had other ideas.

Sharapova was due to play her second-round match against Hungary's Timea Babos later on Wednesday.

Pliskova, the runner-up here previous year, will have to get back to the final to remain atop the rankings, or win the tournament if third-seeded Garbine Muguruza loses in the semifinals.

Roger Federer, of Switzerland, returns a shot to Frances Tiafoe, of the United States, during the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, in NY. So, too, will Karolina Pliskova, the top seed on the women's side. I missed it past year. He put in an appalling performance, but it shows plenty of heart to turn that around in the first round of the grand slam.

"I always thought that he was going to play if he was here practising", Nadal said, as quoted on Metro. There was more trouble when Federer served for the match leading 5-3 in the fifth. She promptly broke back to finish off the victory in 56 minutes.
