Yankees wish Devers was still at Hadlock

Devers hit a stunning homer off Aroldis Chapman to tie the game in the ninth inning, and Benintendi singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th as Boston beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Sunday night.

Called up from Triple-A Pawtucket a few weeks ago, Devers launched a 102.8 Chapman fastball over the left-center field wall, the fastest pitch anyone has hit out since Major League Baseball started officially recording pitch velocity in 2008. "I know the last inning he walked a guy and hit a guy, but if you look at his stuff in the ninth, it was pretty darned good".

A two-out RBI triple by No. 9 hitter Austin Romine spoiled Sale's goose egg, but his numbers were just fine: only four hits allowed, with two walks and the one run in seven innings.

Aroldis Chapman thrilled the sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium on Sunday night with multiple pitches above 100 miles per hour in the ninth inning as he tried to save what would have been a gritty Yankees win over the Red Sox.

With the win, the Red Sox stretched their division lead to 5.5 games over the Yankees, their largest lead of the season. It allowed Chase Headley to race home from first with two outs.

"An incredible swing", Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He's jumped feet-first into this rivalry, and it couldn't come at a better time". But first, the scuffling Yankees face the crosstown-rival New York Mets in the Subway Series beginning Monday night.

Boston held the lead on Friday before a rare bullpen implosion led to a 5-4 setback but had little trouble getting to Yankees ace Luis Severino on Saturday and blasted its way to a 10-5 triumph. Devers is also just the second rookie to homer off Chapman (Maikel Franco did so in 2015), but the 20-year-old is the youngest player to hit a home run against the flame-throwing southpaw.

Something hasn't been quite right with Aroldis Chapman all season, and now it's official: the Yankees have a closer crisis on their hands.

Girardi called on Kahnle as Chapman walked off to boos. They went 12-6 in their first 18 games after the All-Star break, but have won only 4 out of 12 games since then.

The first one came off the bat of Luke Scott on June 26, 2011, when Chapman was on the Cincinnati Reds.

Winning Sunday night would have made that task of catching the Red Sox seem more doable.

But the Yankees will have to play better in one run games. Bradley put Boston ahead with a single before Austin Romine answered with his first career triple, a drive that glanced off the mitt of Betts, a 2016 Gold Glove victor, as he backed into the right-field wall. The Yankees went on to a 2-1 win. While signing autographs as the Red Sox took batting practice, Montgomery was helped off the field after being struck in the ear by a ball.
