U.S. officials says confrontation with North Korea not imminent

"He conducted two in July, so it wouldn't surprise me if there was another missile test", Pompeo said to Fox News on Sunday.

Speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation", Pompeo said Trump had "made very clear that the United States finds it unacceptable for a rogue leader like Kim Jong Un to have the capacity of a ballistic missile with a warhead that is integrated and fully deliverable to the United States and hold America and the world at risk".

"Each time they test another missile, or if they should conduct a nuclear weapons test, they develop expertise".

US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster echoed the tenor of Pompeo's remarks, saying the threat posed by North Korea is "coming to a head", but adding in an interview on ABC, "we're not closer to war than a week ago".

Donald Trump in particular has promised "fire and anger" at North Korea.

"Nothing is imminent. But be careful, the increased likelihood of a nuclear missile strikes the United States is a very risky threat", added the director of the u.s. central intelligence agency.

"Our response is we're prepared militarily to deal with this if necessary".

Mr Pompeo said "there's nothing imminent today", in response to a question about how anxious people should be over the escalating tensions. "What he does is he asks us to make sure that we have viable options for him - options that combine diplomatic, economic and military capabilities". "President Trump has made it clear that it is his intention to protect the American people".

The North then came out with a threat to lob four intermediate-range "Hwasong-12" missiles near Guam, a tiny USA territory some 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) from the North's capital, Pyongyang.

"Ideally, I'd love a denuclearized North Korea, but as I learned when I went there and had some pretty intense dialogue with them, that is a nonstarter with them", Clapper, who served under former President Barack Obama, told host Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union".

Referring to Kim, President Trump added: "If he utters one threat ... or if he does anything with respect to Guam or any place else that's an American territory or an American ally, he will truly regret it, and he will regret it fast".

"President Trump inherited a mess", Graham said.

Pompeo said the rhetoric from Trump was geared at sending a message to North Korea and letting the isolated nation know that the USA policy of "strategic patience" had come to an end.
