Manhunt Underway After Fatal Shooting of Missouri Officer During Traffic Stop

Law enforcement officers have been looking for Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton, who is suspected of stepping out of his auto during a traffic stop and opening fire on a police officer.

Clinton police officer Gary Michael, 37, who had been on the force less than a year, died late Sunday near Clinton, about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City, said Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe.

As Michael exited his vehicle in downtown Clinton, the alleged shooter also got out of his auto and fired once at the officer before fleeing the scene and crashing his vehicle into an embankment about four blocks away, Lowe said. The vehicle stopped was registered to Ian McCarthy of Clinton, and Lowe said Monday that McCarthy is suspected in the killing.

Michael returned fire as McCarthy sped away.

On Monday, police said they are confident they will find McCarthy, and that they will not let him dictate the search.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of fallen Clinton, Missouri Police Officer Gary Michael", the Secret Service tweeted out. A nationwide manhunt for McCarthy was launched Monday.

"We want to make sure we are diligent in finding where he is", Lowe said.

After leaving the Army, Michael returned to Clinton and spent some time working in the family vehicle and real estate business until he felt pulled to serve again, Chris Michael said. By 6:30 a.m., officers had located the suspect vehicle, but the suspect remained on the run.

Investigators found evidence that directly linked him to the crime, Lowe said.

"Every traffic stop is different", he said. We know as police officers that those traffic stops are always unsafe because we don't know the individual that is driving.

If you see McCarthy or have any idea where he may be, call 911.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is warning the public that McCarthy should be considered armed and risky, so they recommend not making contact with him.

McCarthy had previously been charged with unlawful possession of firearm in July 2015, a felony, and operating a vehicle without a valid license in 2013.

The shooting unfurled in downtown Clinton, nearly a few government structures, including the Henry County courthouse, library and sheriff's office.

"He needs to be apprehended before he harms anyone else", Lowe said.

The incident was a shock for Michael's family and friends and condolences poured in from the local law enforcement agencies.
