South Africa's main opposition party urges ANC lawmakers to vote Zuma out

South Africa's assets gained on Monday with the rand surging as much as 1.7 percent in part because a parliamentary speaker allowed a secret ballot in Tuesday's vote of no-confidence against President Jacob Zuma.

Mr Zuma has survived six earlier no-confidence votes since becoming president in 2009.

Zuma's critics wanted the no confidence vote to be anonymous, hoping it will embolden ANC lawmakers to support his removal by shielding them from pressure from other party members.

"Members of the parliament take an oath of faithfulness to the Republic of South Africa, and obedience to the Constitution and laws, and there is no constitutional obligation for a member to swear allegiance to his or her political party", Mbete said in her announcement.

Mthembu accused Julius Malema, a former protege of Zuma who now leads the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters party, of wishful thinking for saying more than 60 ANC members in parliament will back the no-confidence vote. Business Leadership South Africa, (BLSA), has nailed it's colours to the SA mast, advising members to give their staff time off on Tuesday to join the mass protest without losing pay or any benefits.

Zapiro's take on the Concourt's decision to put the Secret Ballot call in Baleka Mbete's hands. Cope leader Mosiua Lekota said the secret ballot was "the only right decision any Speaker could have made", and that this was "groundbreaking".

In recent weeks, two ANC politicians who publicly said they meant to vote against President Zuma were quickly censured by the party. Should the motion fail she also would have presented the ANC with an opportunity to gloat about its unshakeable unity despite the odds. They must use their vote tomorrow to stand up to grand corruption and vote to remove Jacob Zuma as President.

IFP Chief Whip Narend Singh said a successful vote of no confidence would be the nuclear bomb to cleanse the country of corruption, as African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) leader Kenneth Meshoe expressed his "delight".

The motion, which was introduced by the opposition Democratic Alliance, needs 201 out of 400 votes to succeed. "Ultimately a secret ballot wouldn't have been offered unless Zuma was confident of wining", said Nomura emerging markets economist Peter Attard Montalto.
