Aussie Travellers Facing Massive Airport Lines Thanks To Beefed-Up Security

The four men arrested over the alleged plot are yet to be charged, as more details about how they were caught comes to light.

A 50-year-old man was released on Wednesday without charge.

Three men are being held in custody under special provisions of the Crimes Act.

Federal police have spent days searching several properties across Sydney following the arrest on Saturday afternoon of the men on suspicion of being behind the conspiracy.

Due to the recent spate of terror attacks in Britain and France, and the extremely high security protocols around U.S.travel restrictions, Bishop said terrorist groups are probably looking for targets that appear soft and trying to "test the water, to see if they could pull an attack off".

Domestic travellers have been told to arrive at least two hours prior to their flights, in order to allow enough time to pass through airport security screenings, with global travellers instructed to turn up three hours prior.

"There's a lot of stress associated there, and not knowing, and he was shocked that he was being questioned", Kheir said.

In response to calls for ID checks, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Thursday airport security measures were "constantly under review".

Etihad operates direct flights to four Australian cities: Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.

Since police turned their focus to the alleged plotters last week, investigators uncovered information about the alleged earlier attempt that got as far as the airport terminal.

Police have not identified the airline that was allegedly targeted in the plot, nor the specific means that were to be used to bring it down, other than to say it involved an "improvised device".

Justice Minister Michael Keenan has said it was "quite a sophisticated plot".

'(Security measures) will be required for as long as the threat is assessed as requiring them, ' he said.

He told reporters in Perth that the times passengers had been advised to arrive at airports would return to normal after being extended following the alleged plot which "has been disrupted and it has been contained".

"The Etihad Airways aviation security team is assisting the Australian Federal Police with its investigation and the matter is ongoing", it said.
