United States pledges $140 million to Lebanon in Syrian refugee aid

US President Donald Trump speaks during a press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri in the Rose Garden of the White House, Washington, July 25, 2017.

"In Lebanon we are fighting ISIS and al-Qaeda. For me, stability is the most essential part of my role in Lebanon", Hariri said during a lecture he gave at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. And we'll keep on the partnership, hopefully, for the best of the region. NPR's Jackie Northam has reported that the US response to the crisis has been confused, "You have President Trump. publicly siding with Saudi Arabia".

"We agreed with all political parties that we would always have our political differences, us and Hezbollah".

Washington- The United States will give Lebanon an extra $140 million to help Syrian refugees and the communities hosting them, the State Department said during a USA state visit by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

As the Al-Monitor notes, the State Department's 2018 budget plan cuts military assistant to Lebanon and other vulnerable Middle East countries by 80 percent compared to the 2016 fiscal year.

Negotiations began on Tuesday between Lebanese officials and the Nusra Front over the withdrawal of remaining militants to insurgent-held territory in Syria, he also said.

The operation commander of Hezbollah has declared in a statement that fighting al-Nusra elements is ending and it urged all terrorists to disarm and surrender to save their lifes. "So it's very crucial".

He added: "We discussed the efforts Lebanon is making to safeguard our political and economic stability while combating terrorism". Rather, the cuts are part of Trump's across-the-board effort to reduce U.S. foreign aid.

Mr Trump promised continued American military help to prevent Isis and other militant groups from gaining a foothold in the country. "It's a very effective fighting force".

On Tuesday, Hezbollah, a US -designated foreign terrorist organization, announced it was on the verge of ousting the Sunni terrorists from the area, and it called on those surviving to surrender to avoid further bloodshed.

"The group continues to increase its military arsenal which threatens to start yet another conflict with Israel", Trump added. With the support of Iran, the organization is also fueling humanitarian catastrophe in Syria. He also hoped to appeal to lawmakers to make sanctions against Hezbollah as specific as possible, so that they do not hurt Lebanon. The sanctions would expand previous congressional sanctions from 2015 by blocking the assets of any individual or entity that supports Hezbollah or its affiliates.

The US has long condemned the group, and it has been a designated foreign terrorist organisation by the US since 1997.

The draft legislation was leaked to Lebanese news outlets last April, causing a considerable amount of fear that it could potentially destabilize Lebanon's financial sector.
