Virgil van Dijk left out of Southampton's pre-season squad

Liverpool are keen to land the Dutch defender but Jurgen Klopp withdrew his interest last month after tapping up allegations.

A move could yet transpire, although it is likely to hinge on van Dijk's attitude and his willingness to force a move.

Van Dijk has also been left out of the club's squad for a training camp in France this week, amid claims from Pellegrino that he is "not 100%" mentally.

The 26-year-old Dutch worldwide cnetral defender has been training on his own after telling new boss Mauricio Pellegrino that he wants to leave the club.

"Now he is not involved with the team because psychologically he is not 100%".

Van Dijk has been the strongest part of Southampton's defence ever since he made his way into the club from Celtic back in the summer of 2015.

If the deal goes through, it will make Van Dijk the most expensive defender in the world.

Based on this report though, it appears as though the Reds are still hopeful as with Van Dijk previously training alone and now not making Mauricio Pellegrino's squad, it all points to the likelihood that he will be sold before the season starts.

Liverpool, needless to say, are hoping that Southampton's resolve on that front breaks shortly and the club decide they'd rather have a significant transfer fee to invest in new players than a player who clearly wants away from the club.

According to The Mail, Liverpool will only table an official offer for Van Dijk, who is said to valued at around the £50m ($65.1m) mark and has his heart set on a move to Merseyside, if they receive the green light from Southampton.

The 26-year-old Algerian global excelled in Leicester's title-winning campaign with 17 Premier League goals, though he couldn't match that last season, scoring just six times - and many expect him to leave this summer.
