Father says time to let Charlie Gard go

The parents of Charlie Gard, a terminally ill British baby, have ended their legal challenge to bring him to the United States for an experimental treatment, according to multiple reports.

The parents say it is now too late for the experimental U.S. treatment to work and have announced their decision before the case continued to be disputed in the high court.

The hospital has said the best option would be to withdraw life support, but his parents want to take him to the USA for an experimental treatment for his genetic disorder.

Charlie Gard's parents were told that their son had irreversible brain damage after he suffered seizures before Christmas, but they did not believe it.

Shortly after entering the hospital, Charlie's parents wanted to send their son to the U.S.to receive an experimental treatment, but medical professionals at GOSH said the therapy was unlikely to help due to the infant's worsening health.

"The parents worst nightmare have been confirmed", Armstrong said, explaining that US neurologist Dr. Michio Hirano had said he was no longer willing to offer the baby experimental therapy after he saw the results of a new MRI scan last week.

The case has resonated internationally, and the chairman of the hospital said in a statement that members of its community have been "subjected to a shocking and disgraceful tide of hostility and disturbance".

Her partner, Chris Gard, said on the steps of the court: "We are going to spend our last precious moments with our son Charlie".

Mr Justice Francis said "no parent could have done more for their child (and) none of us can begin to understand their agony", before confirming he would not change the orders he made in April.

But in their statement on Monday's hearing, the hospital also criticized Hirano, saying it was concerned because he had testified that he retained a financial interest in some of the compounds he proposed prescribing for Charlie.

The ruling led to the intervention of both US President Donald Trump and Pope Francis, who offered to help the baby, leading to the hospital to ask the courts for a final assessment of any new evidence. The hospital sought to remove his life support so he can "die with dignity".

The doctors at GOSH argued every medical option has already been considered and treatment in another country would not be in Charlie's best interest.

Grant Armstrong, who is representing Charlie's parents, said Gollop should have told the couple about the scan before the hearing.

Meanwhile, the couple said they were "extremely upset" at "hurtful comments" they had received from the public.

Outside court, supporters calling themselves Charlie's Army reacted with anger and tears, chanting: "shame on you judge" and 'shame on GOSH '.

The judge had scheduled a two-day hearing to consider fresh evidence after Dr. Michio Hirano, an American neurology expert from Columbia Medical Center in NY, came to London to examine the child.

While Judge Francis paid tribute to Ms Yates and Mr Gard for the love and care they had given to their son.
