1 killed, 2 wounded at Israeli embassy in Jordan

Two Jordanians were shot dead after a workman stabbed an Israeli security guard with a screwdriver at the Israeli embassy in Amman, Sunday night, causing him light injuries.

A police statement says two Jordanian men working for a furniture firm had entered the embassy before the shooting.

Police earlier said one person had died and two were injured in the incident in the residential Rabiyeh neighbourhood of Amman. The injured Israeli is "deputy director of security at the Israeli embassy and is still receiving treatment in hospital", the source added.

The mosque's installation has triggered the bloodiest clashes with Palestinians in years.

Israel and Jordan have become embroiled in a diplomatic row in the aftermath of Sunday's attack on the Israeli embassy in Amman.

Palestinians say the Israeli measures are aimed at paving the way for the Judaization of the city.

The Foreign Ministry told the Israeli media that it considers the incident to be a terror attack and related to the current Temple Mount crisis.

The Arab League yesterday accused Israel of "playing with fire" with new security measures at a highly sensitive Jerusalem holy site.

The Jordanian news site Hala Akhbar, which is linked to the kingdom's military, quoted diplomatic and security officials as saying that Jordan refused to let the guard leave without an investigation. Jordan is the custodian of the mosque.

Israel installed metal detectors at entrances to the site following an attack nearby that killed two policemen.

Muslim religious leaders have alleged that Israel is trying to expand its control at the site under the guise of security, a claim Israel denies. "We are a step away from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and cooperation with Jordan and other Sunni states turning into a pan-Muslim event against the State of Israel", Livni said. The tensions have led to mass prayer protests and Israeli-Palestinian violence.

On Friday evening, a Palestinian broke into a home in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank during a Sabbath dinner and stabbed four Israelis, killing three.

Members of the Arab League will hold an emergency meeting over the crisis on Thursday ( 27 July), the Jordan Times reported.
