Netanyahu pressured over holy site after eight killed

The Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry advised the Israeli president against speaking with Erdoğan in light of the Turkish involvement in the escalating situation but Rivlin made a decision to speak with the Turkish president over the phone. Jordan has a peace treaty with Israel and the two countries cooperate in the battle against Islamic militants in the region, but frequently clash over Israeli policies at the Jerusalem shrine.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said Oday Nawajaa, 17, died on Saturday after being hit by Israeli live fire in the West Bank city of al-Eizariya.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced mounting pressure Sunday over new security measures at a sensitive Jerusalem holy site after a weekend of violence left eight people dead, with fears of further unrest.

After Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced freezing of Palestine's contacts with Israel, the nation's campaign for Jerusalem has effectively begun.

Israeli police installed the detectors at the compound - which is also sacred to Jews who call it Temple Mount - after three Palestinian gunmen killed two officers there on July 14.

The statement went on to say, "They strongly condemn acts of terror, express their regret for all loss of innocent life caused by the violence and hope for a speedy recovery to the wounded".

Laub reported from the West Bank.

"They have no right to install these at the gates of Al Aqsa because the sovereignty over blessed Al Aqsa mosque is ours", Mr Abbas said.

Israeli security forces said they had arrested 25 men active in Hamas.

The website said that Netanyahu had invited the Saudi officials to visit Al-Aqsa Mosque to have a close look at the new security measures there, noting that the Saudis accepted the invitation, but gave no more details.

But as Israel's cabinet met on Sunday with the issue on top of the agenda, Tzachi Hanegbi, the minister for regional development and a senior member of the ruling Likud party, told Army Radio: "They (metal detectors) will remain".

"We are examining other options and alternatives that will ensure security", Mordechai said in an interview with Al-Jazeera.

On Saturday, the Israeli government began dismantling the metal detectors.

Clashes also erupted at the Qalandia checkpoint, the main Palestinian passageway between Ramallah and Jerusalem, where Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
