Dead in Stabbing Attack by Palestinian

Jul 23, 2017, 00:18

(Web Desk) - The latest series of clashes between the Israeli police and the Palestinians has resulted in unrest in Jerusalem following recent Israeli security measures including the installation of metal detectors at the holy site.

At least 47 Israelis and five foreign nationals have been killed in almost two years of such attacks.

Fearing mass demonstrations called for by Palestinian leaders, Israel barred entry to the Al Aqsa mosque compound to Muslim men under the age of 50 on Friday. The attacker was shot dead.

Palestinians had refused to enter the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount - home to the al-Aqsa mosque and Dome of the Rock - unless they were removed, holding prayers outside instead.

The Israeli army and news media say the assailant was shot, but it is not clear whether he or she was killed in the shooting.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cut off all official contacts with Israel over the detectors, and the measures have been condemned by majority-Muslim countries.

Extra security measures were put in place at the complex - known as the Temple Mount by Jews and the Noble Sanctuary by Muslims - after three Arab Israelis attacked a patrol near Lion's Gate a week ago, killing two policemen.

Egypt is extremely anxious about the disproportionate use of force by police against Palestinians in Jerusalem and around Al-Aqsa Mosque, according to a statement.

Apart from wounds from live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas, some victims said they were run over by Israeli armed forces vehicles. Access to the shrine at Temple Mount has been limited to women of any age and men over 50.

Palestinians and Israeli police clashed in and around Jerusalem after the conclusion of Friday prayers leading to the hospitalization of 20 persons.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the status quo will be maintained.

Protests began Sunday after the mosque's leadership urged worshippers to boycott new metal detectors installed at entrances to the mosque.

Since 1967, Israel has increasingly cut off east Jerusalem from its West Bank hinterland.
