Mob sets banks ablaze as policeman 'kills' tanker driver

The post Unrest In Lagos As Angry Truck Drivers Set Banks Ablaze appeared first on leadership.ng.

"The police man ran into sterling bank seeking refuge with the mobile unit attached to the bank, the angry mob then set fire to a auto within the bank premises which slightly affected the building".

The attacked banks it was learnt, were the Diamond Bank where the alleged policeman is attached and a Sterling Bank branch on Wharf Road.

"The fire at the banks was put out by the police and other security agencies as the tanker driver, identified as Azeez was rushed immediately to the hospital for treatment", he said.

The ugly incident occurred after the trailer drivers allegedly parked indiscriminately in front of the bank. Their efforts were complemented by men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command led by their Commander, Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police. When the policemen attached to the first bank shot at the tanker drivers, they regrouped and stormed the bank in anger. The branch's reception area was vandalised and set ablaze.

Angered by the killing and the bank's refusal to hand over the policeman to them, other drivers marched in protest and set the banks ablaze.

"Security operatives attached to the bank disarmed and arrested the fleeing mobile policeman but did not hand him over to the irate mob".

It took the intervention of some soldiers deployed from the Signal Corps of the Nigerian Army (NA) to restore sanity to the area.

Also speaking with Nigerian Tribune, a staff of Diamond bank who declined not to have his name in print stated that staff of the bank were trapped inside the bank during the riot and the fire.

After the police officer reportedly killed the drivers, he was chased by the mob into Diamond Bank.

"The security operatives attached to the branch prevented the mob from entering the branch while evacuating staff and customers before the arrival of police reinforcement".

Members of staff of the banks had to scale the fence to other buildings to make their escape.

Afe said, "We had a fire incident at our branch office on Creek Road, Apapa which severely damaged branch infrastructure as a result of mob action".
