Indian-origin doctor finds 27 contact lenses in woman's eye in UK

Leaving 27 contact lenses in one eye causes a different type of clouding.

Morjaria said her team chose to publish a report about the case to raise public awareness about the need for regular eye exams.

While prepping a 67-year-old female patient for routine cataract surgery at England's Solihull Hospital, physicians noticed a odd bluish blob in one of her eyes. Upon closer inspection, she realized that she'd stumbled upon 17 contact lenses stuck together.

The woman, who was not identified, said she has worn disposable contact lenses for 35 years - but didn't regularly visit the eye doctor.

The lenses were clumped together in a "blueish mass" and were "bound together by mucus", according to the journal.

Specialist trainee ophthalmologist, Rupal Morjaria, told OT that another 10 individual contact lenses were discovered in the woman's eye following further examination at Solihull Hospital.

The case was originally published in the British Medical Journal.

She said: "None of us have ever seen this before". Instead, she had put down her discomfort to dry eyes and ageing, Morjaria said. Doctors suspect that the lenses went unnoticed for so long because the patient did not attend regular optometrist appointments. The woman had not reported any symptoms in a physical assessment done prior to surgery. It's unclear why she never sought help to remove the lenses.

Morjaria and her colleagues chose to publish the patient's case because the clinicians involved previously did not believe that it was possible to retain so many contact lenses in the eye without experiencing symptoms.

If contact wearers know that they didn't take their lenses out and they're feeling a "funny sensation in the eye", Morjaria said, they need to get it checked.

Unfortunately for the pensioner her cataract operation had to be postponed following the surprising discovery.

On their site they explain: "Since a contact lens sits directly on the eye it increases the risk of complications such as eye infections".
