Verizon partner accidentally leaks customer data

However, Verizon has reported to CNN tech that there has been no theft or loss of the customer information which has been made publicly available, following the massive leak.

Whether or not this was done on goal remains to be seen as a spokesperson for Verizon says that they are investigating the matter.

UpGuard, a cybersecurity firm, discovered an unsecured data storage system set up by a third-party Verizon contractor, ZDNet reported. The data was part of a demo system for that project. "Any breaches of data on the vendor's side will affect customers as badly and cost the business stakeholders as dearly as if it had been leaked by the enterprise", it added. Verizon customers. Verizon has confirmed that they were the victim of a data leak affecting up to 6 million customers.

Were an attacker to gain access to a person's PIN, they could theoretically hijack the victim's Verizon account and phone number.

Verizon also said the subscribers affected was "overstated" and that the exposed PINs not actually linked to customer accounts, but rather were numbers used to authenticate customers at call centres.

Vickery notified Verizon of the exposed database on June 13, the UpGuard report states, but the database was not fully secured until June 22.

In addition to names, phone numbers, and PINs, the records also contained home and email addresses, account balances, and lists of subscribed services among other personal details.

The compromised log files, which are generated when a user calls Verizon's help line, included customers' names, mobile phone number, and their account PIN.

Verizon said a "limited amount of personal information" had been left open to external access, as well as additional information that "had no external value". The data was stored on an unprotected Amazon S3 server controlled by an employee of Nice Systems. What's worse is the potential financial impact that this data breach might entail.

Upguard says that some 14 million customers may have been exposed.

"This breach demonstrates the fact that while cloud services like AWS can be secure, it is up to the organisations using them to ensure that these services are configured in a secure fashion", said Rich Campagna, CEO, Bitglass. This could have then further given the attackers access to online services that were protected by SMS-based two-factor authentication.
