MAN: HOMECOMING Swings $40.7m From Thursday Debut

Spider-Man is once again the friendly neighborhood hero of the box office.

At long last, Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In terms of Spider-Man movies, only 2007's "Spider-Man 3" ($59.9 million) had a bigger opening day.

In comparison to other Spider-Man films, Homecoming's preview night debut beats both The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which garnered $7.5 million in midnight showings and $8.7 million in Thursday night showings respectively.

Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, with Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.

Looking back at Sam Raimi's somewhat dated Spidey trilogy and the unfortunately misguided Andrew Garfield Amazing Spider-Man flicks, it's easy to see how the MCU has brought the character into 2017 with a bang, while firmly planting seeds for the future.

Sony reports strong business overseas, where Homecoming is opening in 60 percent of the marketplace. The tally more than quadruples that of the day's #2 film.

In North America, the superhero movie is the only new nationwide offering.

Edgar Wright's Baby Driver - another win for Sony - Wonder Woman and Transformers: The Last Knight will round out the top five.
