Martinez also declined legal representation, saying through an interpreter that she didn't want an attorney and will be represented by "the people". The surviving 9-year-old girl remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

She refused an attorney and even smiled at the news cameras there, giving a thumbs up.

In court, Martinez wagged her finger at a judge, who told her that she shouldn't perform for the cameras.

Gwinnett County Magistrate Judge Michael Thorpe said, "Ma'am, I'm going to caution you to cut out the display for the cameras. Nothing else matters, I am representing the people that are humble, hardworking, the people who suffer and those who have a lot of charges so they understand everything is possible with God". "She was good, went to our church last weekend". Please, you are the hope of the world, each and every one of you.

Thorpe advised Martinez to hire a lawyer or to allow one to be appointed for her. She is also be held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"She says her dad passed away months ago", said Perez.

Local officials called the killings "horrendous". When they arrived on scene, they found the man, identified as 33 year-old Martin Romero and four children deceased.

Other cases get less attention, as when a woman kills a newborn or in children's deaths blamed on neglect, said Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Wright State University in OH and co-author of two books on mothers who have killed children based on about 1,000 cases during the 1990s. "I found that was not the case".

Neighbors and family members were left in shock following the gruesome discovery Thursday morning at Martinez's home outside Atlanta, wondering what could have driven a mother to murder her children.

The neighbours said the Spanish-speaking family had moved to the community recently, and their children seemed happy playing with other neighbourhood children. Police believe Martinez made the call. She was arrested later Thursday and is being held without bond at the Gwinnett County jail.

Martinez, 33, allegedly stabbed her five loved ones to death: Martin Romero, 33, Isabela Martinez, 10; Dacota Romero, 7; Dillan Romero, 4; and Axel Romero, 2. The relative, identified as Hallie Romero, of Loganville, said Diana is expected to be in the hospital for two to three weeks.
