Richards expects Proteas squad to fill De Villiers-Du Plessis void

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis will miss the first Test against England at Lord's for family reasons.

Du Plessis returned home for the birth of his first child and will not be back in time to lead his country on Thursday, with fellow batsman Dean Elgar taking over the captaincy.

While those limited overs series gave England reason to be optimistic, this is the one that really matters, an opportunity to register successive Test series wins over South Africa for the first time since the 1964-65 season after England won in South Africa previous year. She has since been discharged from hospital.

How much do you know about England's new Test captain?

Elgar has no captaincy experience at worldwide level and the sudden change won't help a South African team experiencing a mini-decline, and under pressure.

"So whilst it's obviously disappointing from a South African point of view, I think how they respond to it is going to determine how well they do in the Test match".

Russel Domingo believes that Dean Elgar will have no problem in executing the role as captain. Besides his superb skill, Philander brings a forthrightness to the squad offering clarity following a few weeks in which there's been little of it for the South African team.

"It could play on your mind if you are not used to it", he said of the slope. "Every time he gets the ball in hand he seems to want to run in and bowl faster and get wickets", Philander said.

Theunis de Bruyn, who made his Test debut in March, or the uncapped Aiden Markram will replace the skipper.

"I think De Villiers is a big loss, they will argue that they've gone through the a year ago or so without De Villiers and they've moved themselves up and played some very good cricket", he said.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain echoed Richards' thoughts and warned Joe Root's side not to underestimate the tourists.

The question is what the balance will be - four seamers and two spinners, which would mean a start for Liam Dawson - or five seamers and one spinner, and thus a first Test for Toby Roland-Jones.
