They also claimed that the White House had tried unsuccessfully to get them to apologise to the president for unfavourable coverage in exchange for him getting a negative tabloid story about them killed.

Is the White House using the National Enquirer to threaten and blackmail journalists?

Scarborough and Brzezinski responded Friday, both on their show and in an op-ed published in The Washington Post under the headline "Donald Trump is not well".

The White House offered to have a U.S. tabloid kill a damaging story about the hosts of a cable news show if they personally apologised to the president, according to the two journalists who have become the latest target of Donald Trump's attacks on the media. Trump might easily have known about the relationship between Scarborough and Brzezinski because he and the pair had a warm relationship during the 2016 election campaign period and they had been his guests on a number of occasions. He also claimed Ms Brzezinski was "bleeding badly from a face-lift" at the time. "The Presidential platform should be used for more than bringing people down".

The tweets united Democrats and Republicans in a chorus of protest that amounted to perhaps the loudest outcry since Mr Trump took office.

America Media (which owns National Enquirer) COO Dylan Howard responded in a statement: "At the beginning of June, we accurately reported a story that recounted the relationship between Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, the truth of which is not in dispute".

President Donald Trump is friends with David Pecker who is the publisher of the Enquirer. In the article, Brzezinski and Scarborough refute Trump's story as to why the couple were at his Florida home around New Year's Eve.

One day after being attacked by President Trump, Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough are trying to turn the national conversation around, making it about the president's "erratic behavior" and his emotional health. "I said no!" Trump wrote in a series of tweets. He did not identify the administration officials. "Who did it? Who did it?' He kept asking for the name of the doctor", Brzezinski recalled. You need to call.

On Friday, he called "Morning Joe" a "bad show". Scarborough told RedState he made NBC executives aware of the phone calls "in real time".

In a Twitter post on Friday, Mr Trump gave a different account, saying Mr Scarborough "called me to stop a National Enquirer article". The US president, she added, "happens to disrespect women.it's sad".

Besides their appearance, they wrote a Washington Post opinion piece on the incident.
