Samsung to invest $380M in SC, creating over 900 jobs

Samsung in September past year acquired California-based luxury home appliance brand Dacor and the Newberry plant would, in theory, make its second home appliance manufacturing base in the U.S. The last time the company directly produced home appliance from the U.S. was in 1991 when it had closed down a TV plant.

On Monday, BMW announced plans to invest an additional $600 million in an expansion, creating 1,000 new jobs over the next four years.

In 2016, Caterpillar announced the closure of the Newberry plant and another facility in Ridgeway that resulted in loss of 400 jobs in the state. When the factory is up and running, it will employ workers in various roles, including craftsmen, operators, engineers and other technical and nontechnical positions. Production is expected to start early next year.

"Samsung's investment is great news for SC and the United States, and it is a direct reflection of the fact that America is becoming an even stronger destination for global businesses looking to grow", US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement.

It was rumored earlier this year Samsung was planning to open a plant for home appliances in the US because of President Donald Trump's criticism of imports.

Doosan Group will invest $790 million in expanding its USA plant as well as on research and development of next generation goods like fuel cells.

Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the S.C. Ports Authority, said Samsung's investment is "significant" to the Port of Charleston.

Samsung already operates a call center employing 800 people in Greenville County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) away.

The state's Coordinating Council for Economic Development also has approved job development credits for the project.

"As the demand for the products is rising globally, the establishment of a new USA production line will not lead to the supply decline from factories of other regions", a Samsung Electronics official said.

Samsung said it chose the Newberry site for its workforce, supply chain and access to transportation. "We have a long manufacturing history here in Newberry County, and this writes a whole new chapter". Jim Newsome, president and CEO of the State Ports Authority, called the manufacturer's decision "very significant to the port", adding it "reflects our ability to meet the global supply chain needs of major worldwide manufacturers".

Hyundai Motor America (HMA) held a 20th anniversary event at its Washington office for Hope on Wheels, a program supporting treatment for pediatric cancer patients.

Established in 1969 and employing almost half a million people worldwide, Samsung manufactures TVs, smartphones, wearable devices, cameras, digital appliances, network systems and more.
