Uber makes it easier to arrange trips for other riders

The ride-hailing company launched a feature in more than 30 countries on Tuesday that lets users of the Uber app book a ride for someone other than themselves.

The idea behind services like Lyft and Uber is that you can get a ride from wherever you are. You then select the rider's name from your phone's contact list, enter the chosen destination, and request for their ride. This feature begins rolling out in the US starting today. Uber says that the new feature will also be making its way to other additional markets soon.

The feature is expected to start rolling out on Wednesday, but will only get to users in batches.

Although the person who requested for the ride can pay through his or her stored credit card on the Uber app, the rider will be able to pay in cash. Under the option to request a ride from a location different from the user's current location, the app will now ask if the ride is for the user, or someone else.

You then pick the rider from your address book, key in their destination and kick off the process.

Next, your friend or relative will receive an SMS with all the relevant information, including the driver's name, auto registration, phone number, and a link to track the driver's whereabouts.

In the past, Uber has partnered with organizations such as the Los Angeles based 24Hr Homecare to enable ride booking through phone operators, while their competitor Lyft has done the same for GreatCall members. When you choose the person and approve of the ride, a text will be sent to the rider notifying them about the trip. Riders will not need to have an Uber account. That means you will no longer have to play coordinator when you order a ride for someone else.
