Uber driver sexually assaulted sleeping California passenger

WA Police have charged a 28-year-old Uber driver after he stopped his vehicle mid-journey and indecently assaulted a female passenger while driving her home from a Northbridge venue last month.

Last year, a West Hollywood woman sued Uber Technologies, alleging that the ride-hailing company's negligence led to her being raped by an Uber driver. Investigators say they have surveillance video of the suspect carrying the victim into the hotel.

She fell unconscious in his auto, said LAPD Robbery Homicide Capt. William Hayes.

He has five felony convictions for possession of narcotics for sale in L.A., Ventura and Sacramento counties, police said in a news conference Monday. "To do something that brazen...we would believe it's something he's done before".

In the meantime Spence was behind bars based on $1 million bail.

Anyone with information about additional victims can call Robbery-Homicide Division Special Assault Section Detective Carla Zuniga at 213-486-6910.

Spence is described as a 46-year-old man who stands 5-foot 11 inches and weighs 275 pounds.

Investigators released photos of Spence and his vehicle - a 2015 silver Nissan Sentra with the license plate number 7XUX293.

Although there are no reports of similar crimes, Hayes noted that many sex assault victims do not report being attacked. Uber, Hayes said, has been cooperating with the police investigation and has suspended Spence from the service.

Another Perth Uber driver was convicted of indecent assault in February past year.

Uber screens its Los Angeles drivers in accordance with California laws, which require a seven-year review for non-violent felonies, a company official told DailyMail.com. The exact dates of Spence's felony convictions were not immediately available.
