Michael McCarthy convicted of murder in 2-year-old Bella Bond's

A jury on Monday found a Boston man guilty of second-degree murder in the 2015 killing of a MA toddler, whose body washed up on a beach and prompted a months-long search for the identity of "Baby Doe".

Rachelle Bond, Bella's mother and McCarthy's former girlfriend, testified that she helped dispose of the little girl's body.

In his closing argument, Shapiro said Bond was responsible for Bella's death, saying, "In the end, the monster came for that little girl", Shapiro told the jury, the Associated Press and CBS News report.

Bond testified during the trial, a requirement of her plea agreement, and said that she saw McCarthy punch the child in the stomach.

Bond, who was charged as an accessory, pleaded guilty earlier this year in exchange for her testimony against McCarthy, ABC affiliate WCVB-TV reported in February.

Michael McCarthy was found guilty of second-degree murder Monday in the death of 2-year-old Bella Bond, whose remains were found in a trash bag two years ago near Boston.

After Bella's body washed ashore on Deer Island in Winthrop in June 2015, she was only known as "Baby Doe" until three months later, when a tip led to the arrests McCarthy and Bond.

"Any lost life is heartbreaking and tragic, but any time someone so young and so innocent is lost, it magnifies the pain and the sorrow to bad proportions", Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said.

Suffolk County DA Dan Conley addressed the media after the verdict in the Bella Bond murder trial.

"Justice for Bella", the child's godmother said outside court.

Baby Doe has been identified as Bella Bond, according to a law enforcement official.

McCarthy, 37, will be sentenced Wednesday, prosecutors said. When the girl stopped screaming, Bond testified that she saw that the girl's head appeared to be swollen and her face was gray.

He was originally charged with first-degree murder, but the judge also allowed the jury to decide if he was guilty of second-degree murder or involuntary manslaughter at the prosecution's request. He called her a "monster" who made up a "web of lies" to blame McCarthy.

Fewtrell said she silently prayed, "please don't let him walk". "It just doesn't. Probably more so when you're talking about a baby, a child, a completely innocent victim who didn't deserve this to happen to her", Conley said.

Deakin said while the motive might never be known, McCarthy went into Bella's room one night at bedtime and killed her when she wouldn't go to sleep.
