US Congressional bypoll being seen as test for Trump

Channel 2 Action News has been covering this tight race for months, with exclusive polls and a primetime debate, as more and more attention focuses on metro Atlanta.

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Monday to stump for Handel, warning Americans that health care and tax reform are on the line.

But the district was not almost as supportive of Trump: He beat former secretary of State Hillary Clinton by less than 2 points.

Norman is running in a closer-than-expected special election race against Democrat Archie Parnell, who has narrowed Norman's double-digit lead to within the margin of error of most polls.

Turnout is on track to far exceed what is normal even for a November midterm and certainly beyond expectations for a special election. The first round of the special election was held April 18.

"Very, very encouraged by things". That makes it hard, they say, to know what the numbers actually mean.

Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff are going head-to-head, with Ossoff barely ahead of Handel in the primary runoff. Polls closed at 7 p.m.

Georgia State University political scientists who live in the district are available to discuss the ins and outs of a race that some see as a test for Republicans and the politics of President Trump.

An election official says voting has been moving smoothly at polling sites in Georgia's closely-watched House election. "We believe that Ossoff will fight against Trump and his anti-Latino policies in Congress and truly represent the needs of all of the population in District 6". "VOTE TODAY", Trump tweeted on Tuesday, urging Republicans to vote.

Trump has attacked Ossoff for living just outside the district, claiming Ossoff will raise taxes.

Asper told CNN Ossoff worries her because of his lack of experience at 30 years old.

"As soon as she concludes her medical training I will be back into the district where I grew up, but I want to support her and her career and do right by her".

It's a congressional seat that has historically been safely red, once held by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and most recently vacated by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Handel has aligned herself gingerly with Trump.

Trump also held a fundraiser for Handel while in town for the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in April.

That hasn't stopped the president from weighing in on the race.

The 6th District is home to perhaps 40 percent of Jewish Atlanta's population, representing about 8 percent of the district overall, and the campaign has produced intense interest, activism and debate within the Jewish community.

Ossoff raised more than $23 million, most from outside Georgia. He emphasises that it is mostly from individual donors.

"Republicans are motivated", Handel said.

Handel has benefited from outside money, too.

President Trump weighed in on the election early on Tuesday morning.

That's exceptionally more than what an average House race costs, about $1.4 million for a winning campaign as of 2014.
