Cavaliers in chaos after GM leaves on eve of pivotal summer

Chauncey Billups, who lead the Detroit Pistons to an National Basketball Association championship in 2004, is interested in taking over as general manager of Dan Gilbert's Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland.com reports.

According to reports, negotiations broke down despite James telling ESPN in April that Griffin deserved a new contract.

An executive with the Cavs beginning in 2010, Griffin was named general manager in 2014, and he oversaw the acquisition of LeBron James and Kevin Love, leading to a run of three straight Finals appearances.

Billups' relationship with Gilbert dates back over 10 years, as Billups endorsed Gilbert's Detroit-based mortgage company, Rock Financial, when he played for the Pistons, ESPN notes.

The Cavaliers did not immediately name a replacement for Griffin, who reportedly could not agree with Gilbert on the team's future direction for roster construction.

When the Cavs organization made it clear on Monday that Griffin will no longer be the GM, LeBron James was surprised, to say the least.

On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Griff for his leadership and many contributions during his time here, including most recently, his role in the franchise's first National Basketball Association championship. Reports said the Cavaliers' front office encountered trouble in trade talks because of the uncertainty about Griffin.

Cavaliers coach Tyron Lue was not informed by Gilbert before the two parted ways.

And then there's James, who can become a free agent again after next season. Between the Butler rumors and the team's pursuit of a rental of Indiana Pacers forward Paul George, they're looking at all angles for a possible fix to their Warriors problem.
