Jury to hear Bill Cosby's testimony about quaaludes and sex

Jun 13, 2017, 02:49

The prosecution is expected to finish its case on Friday.

Constand, 44, testified that Cosby penetrated her with his fingers against her will after giving her pills that left her so limp that she was unable to push him away or tell him to stop. It's unclear if he will take the witness stand.

The trial was set to resume on Monday with the defense's case. She said she has neither bias against or toward Cosby. He then waved from the back of an SUV.

Mr Cosby said in a previous police interview that he used Benadryl as a sleep aid, and that he becomes drowsy and falls asleep shortly after taking them. His spokesman says it's under consideration.

Jurors in Bill Cosby's sexual assault case are listening to his testimony about getting quaaludes in the 1970s to give to young women before sex. Defendant puts a new twist on an old argument: "that because Ms. Constand did not reveal this most personal detail about her life she must have been asking for defendant to drug and sexually assault her".

In the deposition, he admits giving quaaludes before sex in 1976 to one of his approximately 60 accusers. The prosecution will continue to lean on Cosby's past deposition, where he apologizes and admits to digitally penetrating Constand.

They also noted dozens of calls Constand made to Cosby after the alleged assault, which they said suggested she was pursuing him romantically.

Shortly, forensic toxicologist Rohrig took the witness stand and stated that Benadryl could have similar effects of Quaaludes. But Cosby spokesman Andrew Wyatt hinted Friday that his boss might be changing his mind.

"Where would that money come from?" a detective asked Cosby.

A detective on Thursday read portions of the deposition covering what Cosby described as several sexual encounters with Constand, including one before the alleged assault where he said he found himself "somewhere between permission and rejection".

Cosby gave the deposition as part of a lawsuit filed by Constand, the former director of women's basketball operations at his alma mater, Temple University. They saved Cosby's damaging deposition testimony until practically the very end.

Earlier Cosby told the court he apologised to Ms Constand's family because her mother thought he was "a dirty old man", according to testimony read to the jury. At the time of the incident, Constand was 31, Cosby 66.

Andrea Costand moved home to her parents after the night she says he assaulted her, and her mother spoke with Cosby by phone about what happened between him and her daughter.

Cosby arrived for the fifth day of his trial Friday accompanied again by Joe Torry.

His interactions with fans outside the courthouse, coupled with a parade of show business friends who have attended the trial in support, have signaled he is intent on repairing his public image. Cosby also claimed that he did not have any quaaludes in his possession or in any of his residences around the time he met Constand in 2002.

Bill Cosby walks back into the courtroom after a break during his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pa., Friday, June 9, 2017. As Deadline exclusively reported yesterday, it is looking increasingly likely that Cosby could now testify in his own defense after previously asserting he would not.

Jurors heard Dr. Veronique Valliere, whose counseling business works with rape victims, talk about how victims react after a sexual assault and why they might delay reporting it.
