WRAPUP 5-Trump calls on Qatar to stop funding terrorism

The Qatari government countered that the list "once again reinforces baseless allegations that hold no foundation in fact" and boasted: "We lead the region in attacking the roots of terrorism".

Newly re-elected President Hassan Rouhani has said the attacks would make Iran more united.

The announcement intensifies the diplomatic and economic campaign to isolate Qatar, a small Gulf Arab state which is a critical global supplier of gas and hosts the biggest USA military base in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia and the UAE listed scores of organizations in a 2014 spat with Qatar. Only an hour later, Tillerson sat in the front row in the Rose Garden as Trump enthusiastically embraced the move by Saudi Arabia, Egypt and others to punish Qatar. The consulate general's statement further said, "Shias and Sunnis are living in complete peaceful co-existence in Iran and all religions have condemned the terrorist and extremist groups and consider them to be the alien agents tarnishing the image of Islam". Saudi Arabia and its counterparts accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism and destabilizing the region because of its ties to their Shiite rival, Iran, and its support for groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.

"The time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding - they have to end that funding - and its extremist ideology in terms of funding", Trump said.

Qatar has disputed the claim that it funds terrorists, with its Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying in English on its website that they are "unfounded allegations" and that the actions taken against it by its neighboring nations are "not justified".

The gas-rich emirate is home to the largest USA airbase in the Middle East, making it a key ally in the US-led coalition against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. The Qatari Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In stressing the need to take action against Qatar, Trump appeared to undercut Tillerson, who had called on Qatar's neighbors to immediately ease their blockade.

Trump has taken a starkly different tack, initially praising the move by Gulf nations to sever diplomatic relations with Doha before reversing course on Wednesday.

"The blockade is hindering U.S. military actions in the region and the campaign against ISIS", Tillerson said, without providing details. Davis said the diplomatic rift has not interrupted or curtailed operations at al-Udeid air base, a launching pad for USA military efforts in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump is ramping up pressure on Qatar to stop what he calls a "high level" of financial support of terrorism, even as Secretary of State Rex Tillerson tries to calm the worst diplomatic crisis in the Persian Gulf in years.

"The Emir of Qatar has made progress in halting" support for and financing of terrorist groups, Tillerson said, "but he must do more and do it quickly".

Tillerson said he had spoken to many leaders in the Gulf region in recent days and supported efforts by the emir of Kuwait to resolve the stand-off. He says the elements of a resolution are available.
