Wallace out to prove 'I belong' in the Cup series

Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr will make his NASCAR Cup debut this weekend in Pocono, filling in for the injured Aric Almirola in the No.43 vehicle. Roush will idle their No. 6 Xfinity auto for at least the time being as Wallace transitions to his new ride in the Cup Series at Richard Petty Motorsports.

On Sunday, Wallace will pilot Richard Petty Motorsports' famed No. 43 auto in the Pocono 400, as Aric Almirola recovers from a back injury suffered in a May 13 crash at Kansas Speedway. After two races from Regan Smith at Charlotte and Dover, Petty has chose to make a switch to Wallace on a full-time basis until Aric Almirola is able to return from a back fracture. "We've been able to make the most of it with those guys".

Wallace may be tempering his goals for the race, but his status as a trailblazer for African-American drivers likely will ensure he gains some attention this weekend.

Max Siegel ranks as a vested observer of the career arc of one Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr., having given the aspiring driver - then a brace-faced teenager - his first start at the NASCAR touring level. "He has shown success in NASCAR's national series and we look forward to him continuing to display his abilities in our vehicle".

To become fans of the sport, people just have to do a little legwork, he said. "I think the biggest thing is focusing on Pocono, making sure we can get, or I can get, all that I can out of the vehicle, making the most of the weekend".

Plenty of racing - and personal growth - has happened in those seven years since Wallace's K&N breakthrough, a span Siegel called "light-years ago" in some regards. Nobody loves finishing second, as we've seen in past races. t's a sport that you want to get everything you can out of it, but sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Wallace quickly proved he had the talent to excel in the top tours. "He has shown success in NASCAR's national series and we look forward to him continuing to display his abilities in our vehicle".

Darrell Wallace Jr is a graduate of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Program, and was a member of the inaugural NASCAR Next Class in 2010. There is no timetable on when Almirola may return, but he is expected to miss 2-3 months. There's no need for me to force a hole, end up tearing up a racecar.

"I guess I'm beating myself up over it right now, that may have something to do with it". "We couldn't be happier with the progress of Aric Almirola's recovery and can't wait to get him back".

"The only flags that I see is green, white, the checkered", Wallace said. "I just have to show everyone I can manage in this series". "I guess a new door has opened for this weekend, and we'll go out there and make the most of it".
