Contagious, potentially deadly dog flu confirmed in Carolinas

The deadly dog flu is back. "The biggest thing you'd probably notice with your dog would be coughing, maybe a runny nose, runny eyes, being lethargic, not wanting to move around very much and appetite falling off, because a lot of times as they get sicker they'll start running a fever", she says.

People can't get the dog flu, but it can be transmitted to cats, according to WJCL. The dogs were from Raleigh, and the North Carolina coast, the report said. Some dogs develop more serious disease and pneumonia that requires hospital care.

Germs from coughing and sneezing dogs can reach up to 20 feet away and can stay on human clothing for up to 24 hours, according to Charleston Animal Society.

"It's just like getting yourself to the doctor when you have symptoms", said Bill Ebner, a dog-owner who was visiting the Oakwood Dog Park on Thursday.

"It has the potential to be pretty similar to the human flu; typically has respiratory signs with coughing", said Dr. Travis Davison of Bluffton Veterinary Hospital.

Dog flu hasn't appeared in the Triad. Infected dogs can spread the virus for up to 28 days.

Oliver says pet owners should try to limit their dogs' contact with contaminated items including bowls, leashes, and toys.

"His chest sounds normal", said Oliver as she checked her dog for symptoms of dog flu. The state agriculture department had reported sick dogs in Davidson County, apparently mistaking it for the town of Davidson. Two doses of the vaccine must be given for optimum immune response.

Veterinarians said this is an entirely new strain of the flu, so previously vaccinations will not prevent further sickness.

The two pups tested positive for H3N2, the same strain of the virus found in Florida and Georgia.
