Third London attacker was Moroccan-Italian: Italy investigative source

Jun 07, 2017, 14:10

A second man arrested by Irish police is being questioned in connection with the London Bridge terror outrage.

Police on Tuesday named the third assailant killed along with Redouane and Khuram Butt by armed police on Saturday as Youssef Zaghba (22), a Moroccan-Italian man who had been placed on an Italian counter-terrorism watch list and stopped by them from travelling to Syria previous year.

Zaghba, Pakistan-born British citizen Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, and Rachid Redouane, 30, who claimed to be Moroccan-Libyan, launched a murderous rampage around London Bridge and Borough Market on Saturday night.

'The police and our partners are doing everything we can across the country to help prevent further attacks and protect the public from harm.

The UK police and security services are under mounting pressure over Saturday's attack, which killed seven people, after it emerged that two of the three attackers had known histories of extremism.

They returned in 2016, before leaving again in March of that year, records show.

"An Garda Siochana is providing every assistance to our colleagues in the London Metropolitan Police in relation to the terror attack in London", a spokesman said.

An Irish identification card was found on the body of one of the three attackers, a Moroccan national in his late 20s who lived in Ireland with his British wife, state broadcaster RTE reported citing police sources.

The Irish Prime Minister Edna Kenny has said Redouane lived in Ireland for a time but did not attract the attention of authorities.

Ireland is hoping to maintain a common travel area between the United Kingdom and Ireland after Brexit.

Gardaí do monitor a small number of people, but confirmed that Redouane was not on their watch list. Both men were from Barking, in the east of London.
