Thad Matta out as men's basketball coach at Ohio State

Thad Matta will no longer coach the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team.

Gene Smith, Ohio State's athletic director, said during the press conference that after the season, the plan was to bring Matta back for the 2017-18 season, but due to some losses on the recruiting trail, Smith did not think that the Buckeyes were recruiting well enough to turn this around.

"Thad and I talked about that, we came to a mutual understanding that it was time for a leadership change in our men's basketball program".

"We weren't winning the battles in recruiting that I thought we might have a chance to win, as he did", Smith said.

Matta inherited a program facing a one-year postseason ban and put together a 20-12 season.

Matta is the winningest coach in Ohio State history and led his team to the national title game in 2007.

Matta previously underwent emergency back surgery in 2007 that left him without a fully functioning right foot due to nerve damage. "But honestly my whole focus right now is trying to get healthy".

Matta was also an assistant coach at Indiana State, Butler, Miami University and Western Carolina. The school paid a $650,000 bonus on April 30 as part of that contract.

"While this may be a surprise to many, it's the right thing for our program at this time", Smith said. Matta had dealt with some health issues for years. "And during that conversation, it became apparent to me, that we probably needed to facilitate a change", Smith said. He took the Ohio State job after head coach Jim O'Brien was sacked in the summer of 2004.

The Buckeyes' head coach is calling it a career in Columbus, per a report.

. And that to me is something that I want to hold or hang my hat on.
