Senegal, Israel quash diplomatic crisis at ECOWAS Summit

Togo President, Faure Gnassingbè has been announced as the new chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Israel announced that it will immediately return the Israeli ambassador to Senegal back to his post and, in exchange, Senegal will support Israel's application to be an observer at the European Union.

Prime Minister Netanyahu urged his hosts that bilateral relations need to be expressed in global forums, where African states have not usually sided with Israel. Israel reacted furiously to the resolution, denouncing it as "shameful".

The King was scheduled to meet with the President of Liberia, talks with ECOWAS Heads of State and a speech to the Organization's Summit were scheduled, the ministry added in a statement. Jerusalem does not have diplomatic relations with Malaysia and Venezuela. According to the PMO, Netanyahu and Keita agreed to "warm" relations between the two countries.

Israel and Senegal declared on Sunday an end to the diplomatic crisis stemming from Senegal's sponsorship on an anti-settlement UN Security Council resolution last December, following a meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Senegal President Macky Sall.

The meeting is the first to be hosted by Liberia since the inception of the ECOWAS 42 years ago.

Prior to leaving for Liberia, Netanyahu said he would use his trip to the ECOWAS summit to try and garner support for Israel at the United Nations and other worldwide forums.

Over the last few days, however, key ECOWAS member States chose to reduce their level of representation at the Summit due to their disagreement with the invitation extended to the Israeli Prime Minister, the ministry stated.

Netanyahu has made strengthening Israel's relationship with African nations a major priority.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Liberia on Saturday night.
