India confirms three Zika virus cases

"But, no new case was found", said Gupta. It has also issued an advisory for screening all pregnant women. Indoor fogging, anti-larval activities and health education were carried out during house to house campaign. The government has also conducted various training programmes for healthcare staff.

Although, only three cases have been reported so far, Indian conditions are favourable for the outbreak of the disease.

The WHO has not recommended any travel or trade restriction to India based on the current information available.

When these mosquitoes bite an infected person, it can take virus and when the same mosquito bites a healthy person, Zika virus gets transmitted. We don't see any surveillance or cleanliness activity in Bapunagar area."Haresh Patni of Hirawadi area in Bapunagar concurs, "We were not aware of any Zika virus detection in Bapunagar".

While not usually fatal and quite treatable, the Zika virus can cause you to suffer from mild fever, headache, skin rash, muscle and joint pain, malaise and conjunctivitis. Pregnant women or women contemplating having children have been asked to postpone travel to Zika affected countries besides mosquito bite prevention measures.

When the virus infects a pregnant woman, it can cause a variety of birth defects including microcephaly, where the baby's head is abnormally small.

A WHO statement on Friday said India's health ministry had on May 15 this year reported three cases of Zika infections - a 34-year-old woman who had just delivered a baby, a woman in her 37th week of pregnancy, and a 64-year-old man - all residents of Ahmedabad's Bapunagar area. "This is the first Zika positive case reported through AFI surveillance at BJMC, Ahmedabad, Gujarat State".

Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel in March had told reporters that only one case of the Zika virus has been detected in the country.

According to NDTV, India has tested nearly 50,000 blood samples as part of its surveillance system to detect and contain new Zika infections. During her hospital stay, she developed a low grade fever after delivery. A sample, therefore, was referred to the Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) at BJMC for Dengue test and thereafter was found to be positive for Zika virus.

According to the World Health Organization, the earliest infection was detected in February 2016 and the most recent one was found this January.

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus first identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys through a network that monitored yellow fever. In October 2015 Brazil reported an association between Zika virus infection and microcephaly. "No new cases or abnormalities have been reported in the recent past", he added.

However, Indian government has said that there is no need to panic as all the three patients have now recovered.
