Turkish-EU relations seem back on track

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is planning to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit Thursday in Brussels, her spokesman said.

Turkey rejected the USA resolution, calling it "one-sided" and attacking what it said were insufficient US security measures.

He added, "The EU has no right to consider Turkey as if it were a beggar at its door".

Two weeks ago, a group of peaceful protesters were brutally attacked and beaten by members of the security detail attending Turkish strongman president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told Fox News on Sunday that USA officials called the ambassador of Turkey into the State Department "to discuss what occurred with them and express our view that this is simply unacceptable".

A United Nations spokesperson at the time called the incident "unfortunate misunderstandings" and that "necessary action" was taken to prevent such "misunderstandings in the future", although this was not elaborated on.

Ankara has warned it will step up its attacks on the YPG, and on May 3 senior presidential aide İlnur Çevik said United States forces embedded with YPG fighters in Syria were in danger of being hit by the Turkish military.

"Yesterday (Wednesday) we were informed that it was now not considered opportune for Turkey's highest level to hold political talks with the German parliamentary side in Turkey", Roth said, describing the situation as "political provocation". The statement came after Erdogan's earlier threat to say "goodbye" to the European Union unless the process of Turkey's accession to the bloc was moving forward.

Stating that there is no obstacle on the path of deepening Tehran-Ankara ties, he said: "Regional cooperation between the two countries, especially in the Astana meeting, contributes to peace and stability in the region".

President Donald Trump has not addressed the attack on US citizens and has maintained a collegial relationship with Erdogan.

"The D.C. police were able to intervene before the conflict escalated, and attempted to get them back on the sidewalk".

The Congressmen emphasized that Turkish security personnel violated the constitutional rights of the American people on American soil, at the order of Erdogan.

Erdogan's presidency has been harsh on Turkish journalists.

"When the police were ordering them to stop, they simply ignored this order, something I've never seen in America", he said. I felt so helpless as I laid on the ground.

State Department officials expressed "concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms" and summoned the Turkish Ambassador for a visit.
