'Top Gun 2': 'Oblivion's Joseph Kosinski Frontrunner To Direct Tom Cruise Sequel

Cruise recently said that Top Gun 2, now over 30 years since after first movie's release, is in fact happening. The film earned more than $350 million worldwide and turned charismatic Cruise into a superstar.

Kosinski is an excellent director when it comes to visuals and style so this is definitely the flawless match for a Top Gun sequel. The actor replied in the affirmative and further revealed that the movie will probably go on the floors from next year onwards. Other plot details are vague but Val Kilmer has gone on record that he was asked to come back to reprise the role of Iceman opposite Cruise's Maverick.

Cruise reportedly met with potential directors for Top Gun 2 before and during the filming of Mission Impossible 6 in London.

The original film was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson.

Bruckheimer will produce the sequel, and according to Hollywood Reporter Joseph Kosinski is now the front-runner to assume directing duties as original director Tony Scott unfortunately passed away in 2012.

Rumors hit a fever pitch last January when Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself and Cruise. Kosinski has also previously directed Tom Cruise in the highly underrated 2013 action film Oblivion.

Top Gun is a classic 1986 film which many hold true to their heart. "Still got the moves!" he posted. The original film also starred Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins, who are yet to comment on whether they'd like to be involved or not.
