Zverev reaches first Masters final in Rome

Germany's Alexander Zverev defeated home favorite Fabio Fognini in straight sets in the third round of the Italian Open on Thursday in a match which saw the Italian lose his cool over a line call and fail to recover.

"I don't look at these kind of stats, who is the youngest player to have a Masters 1000 title or things like this".

Nadal, a former seven-time champion in the Italian capital, had dominated Thiem to win the Madrid Masters final last week.

Alexander Zverev's eye-catching week at the Rome Masters continued with a semi-final victory over John Isner on Saturday.

"He's a tough guy to ace", Isner said.

After losing a tight second set in which neither player dropped serve, Zverev responded by breaking at the first opportunity in the third.

Thiem will now take on either world number two Novak Djokovic or Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro, meeting for the 18th time on Friday evening, in Saturday's semi-final at the Foro Italico.

On the women's side, fourth-ranked Simona Halep advanced to the final and extended her clay-court winning streak to 10 matches by beating Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 7-5, 6-1.

However, Isner is in better shape to put one across Zverev today after his stunning run in the ongoing tournament - he has beaten the likes of Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Stanislas Wawrinka and Raonic enroute to the last-four clash.

After dropping five set points while serving for the opening set at 5-4, Halep started knocking her head with her finger as if saying, "Wake up".

In the WTA event, French Open champion Garbine Muguruza was forced to retire due to a neck injury from her semi-final against Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.
