The opening of the $2.6 billion stadium that will house the Rams and Chargers in Inglewood has been delayed by one year, due largely to unusually heavy winter rainfall that hampered construction, officials announced Thursday.
Since the announcement of StubHub Center as the temporary home of the Los Angeles Chargers in January, the LA Galaxy, AEG and the Chargers have announced numerous investments to improve facilities and the fan experience at StubHub Center in advance of the 2017 MLS and National Football League seasons.
Kevin Demoff is the Rams' Chief Operating Officer and said the time could be made up eventually, but for now, they want to focus on getting the stadium right and not about rushing to finish.
The transition to Los Angeles has been anything but smooth so far.
So let's break this down: the Chargers moved from San Diego to Los Angeles ostensibly because they couldn't get the city to finance Dean Spanos' dream monstrosity downtown.
It isn't about being a playoff contender by the time they move into the new stadium. "If it incurred extra costs by delaying, that was fine as long as we delivered the stadium that met his vision and what this project needs to be". Despite bringing drought relief to the region, the rain fell during the mass excavation period of construction when no other work could proceed in wet conditions.
"We counted nearly double that in two months, which came at the most critical time", Koger said on the call.
The stadium needed to be built on a 90-foot hole - now fully excavated - to avoid radar issues for planes flying into nearby Los Angeles International Airport. That resulted in water standing 12 to 15 feet deep and a standstill in construction for two months earlier in 2017. Hooker underwent surgery in late January to fix two injuries suffered last season, a torn labrum and a hernia. The Chargers will play home games at AEG's StubHub Center in Carson.
The greatest concern with the delay may not involve either the Rams or Chargers. One of the NFL's criteria for hosting a Super Bowl is that a stadium must be open for two seasons before it can host a Super Bowl. Since league rules state that a new stadium can't host a Super Bowl, will this announcement cause a change of venue for the Big Game? The overall project has a price tag estimated at about $2.6 billion.
The Rams were planning to roll out a redesign of their new uniforms for 2019 to coincide with the opening of their stadium.
