Former acting AG Yates claims she warned WH about Flynn's Russian Federation ties

May 10, 2017, 01:51

Separately on Monday, former Obama officials said he had raised general concerns about Mr Flynn with Mr Trump and had told the incoming president there were better people for the national security post.

Former acting attorney general Sally Yates spent Monday testifying in front of a Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Russian Federation and Michael Flynn.

This is the story she detailed to a Senate committee on Monday.

Flynn was later fired for lying to Vice President Mike Pence about his conversations with the Russia's ambassador to the U.S.

Yates told a Senate panel she alerted the White House more than two weeks before Trump fired Flynn for having lied about contacts with Russia's ambassador to the United States. "To state the obvious - you don't want your national security adviser compromised with the Russians".

Yates brought one of her top staffers with her on the afternoon of January 26 to meet with McGahn and one of his top aides inside a secure facility on the White House grounds so they could discuss the FBI's interview of Flynn. "The vice president was unknowingly making false statements to the American public, and General Flynn was compromised by the Russians". "What matters is the president acted decisively very early in the administration to get rid of General Flynn".

The nature of Obama's misgivings about Flynn was not clear.

I think it's absolutely worth trying to get to the bottom of how Yates came to know what she knew about Flynn and Russian Federation and how that information got to The Washington Post. Yates and Clapper both swore under oath that they had never leaked classified information. Amy Klobuchar, Yates said she did not know about the travel ban before it was issued. Devin Nunes, the Republican chairman of the committee, reported meeting with a secret source at the White House to review classified material that he said indicated that communications of Trump associates were captured in "incidental" surveillance of foreigners.

According to NBC News, when Mr. Trump was just a president-elect, he sat down with then-President Barack Obama.

This time, the surprise wasn't so much about what the president as it was about where how he said it. Flynn served under Obama as defense intelligence chief before Obama dismissed him.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and chair of the Senate Judiciary crime and terrorism subcommittee, has been outspoken about Russia's interference in the 2016 election and has called for a stronger US response than the sanctions now levied.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer called Yates a "political opponent" of President Trump.

Instead, Trump chose to play up former director of national intelligence James Clapper's acknowledgement during the same hearing that he was not aware of any evidence of collusion between the president and Russian Federation, which American intelligence has concluded tried to sway the U.S. election in Trump's favor.

U.S. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) takes questions from reporters after Democratic and Republican party policy luncheons at the U.S. Capitol in Washington January 7, 2015. "Sally Yates made the fake media extremely unhappy today -- she said nothing but old news!" he said in other tweets. Obama that month told one of his closest advisers that the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Clapper said Monday that he was not aware of any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. He retired when Trump took office.

During that section of the hearing, Clapper described as accurate a report in the Guardian newspaper that British intelligence officials became aware in late 2015 about suspicious interactions between Trump advisers and Russian agents, and that the information was passed on to US intelligence agencies.
