Intel hastens CPU and platform updates due to AMD pressure

After nearly a decade of relative peace of mind for Intel, the launch of AMD Ryzen has set foot in the offices of the world's largest processor manufacturer for computers and servers. While it's too early for us yet to say which is the best in terms of benchmark results, we can certainly pit the two chip rivals' respective processors to see which sounds best on paper. Meanwhile, Intel will reportedly launch its Coffee Lake refresh in August of this year rather than waiting until January 2018. The AMD Ryzen 7 1800X comes with eight cores ad 16 threads which allow the processor to clock in at a speed of 3.60 GHz and have an overwhelming 95W TDP.

Coffee Lake chips will be the fourth processor line to use Intel's 14-nm architecture after Broadwell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake.

The Ryzen 7 1800X is AMD's highest-end processor right now. A 12-core Skylake-X processor will be launched in August. Intel, of course, was never going to take this lying down - and new rumors suggest the company will accelerate the launch of its Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs, pulling them forward to a June Computex unveiling as opposed to the original August timeline.

PerformanceAs for performance, most people generally consider Intel to be better than AMD, and according to performance expectations, the same could ring true with the companies' latest releases. Intel famously retired its "tick tock" strategy of alternating biannual architecture and process changes with the Kaby Lake generation, adding a third "optimisation" step. Check out our full discussion of gaming and Ryzen from early March for more details. And given that the Kaby Lake CPU offering doesn't really offer much of a performance improvement over 2015's Skylake, gamers might well choose an AMD processor and motherboard for their next upgrade.
