Mountain lion snatches family dog from California home

A mountain lion slipped into a California home and killed a small dog while the dog's owners slept nearby, sheriff's deputies say. That was until she saw a mountain lion escaping out the back door.

Fought said she thought Lenore finally recognized the bigger dog.

She woke up and saw a shadow of an animal walk through her partially open French doors and enter her bedroom.

According to a press release sent by the Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred Monday in a home in Pescadero, a San Mateo County town two miles east of State Route 1 and Pescadero State Beach.

Around 3 a.m., the woman said she woke up after the dog began to bark aggressively.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife were notified about the incident, but a wildlife warden said there was no evidence of the lion outside what Fought had already discovered, according to NBC.

"But mountain lions are wild animals, they're hunters", he said. And while she never saw the lion's face, she said she could tell by its size and the way it moved that it was the reason her small dog stopped barking. "We had one open a few inches or so, I don't know, maybe six or eight inches wide", Fought explained.

Fought's bed is about a foot away from the back door.

Those residing in mountain lion territory are also warned to avoid attracting deer, mountain lion's main prey, keep brush trimmed to reduce places where they can hide; and consider installing motion detector lights around the house.

Authorities are advising residents to secure their doors and windows, as more than half of California is mountain lion habitat.

Deputies searched the area and found paw prints the Sheriff's Office believes to belong to a mountain lion.

"Obviously they're very shaken up by this, they lost a family member and it was a surprise in the way it happened", Zuno said. Fought says she was sleeping in the same room as her 12-year-old daughter and their little dog, named Lenore.
