Emma Morano, world's oldest person, dies in Italy at age 117

Emma Morano, the oldest person in the world, passed away at age 117 in her Italian home on Saturday afternoon, according to the Associated Press.

Ms Morano, born on November 29, 1899, had been living in a tidy, one-room apartment, where she was kept company by her caregiver and two elderly nieces.

She survived several hardships including leaving an abusive marriage and the death of her only son. She was discovered not breathing in her home by her caretaker on Saturday, and was eventually confirmed dead by the physician who looked after her over the last 25 years.

Dr Bava, who also lives in Verbania, had been her doctor for almost a quarter of a century.

"When I met her, she ate three eggs per day, two raw in the morning and then an omelette at noon, and chicken at dinner". She was officially the last person born in the 1800s still living.

She married Giovanni Martinuzzi in 1926 and in 1937, gave birth to her only child, who died just months later. "She forgets nothing", Yamile Vergara, her nurse for over 40 years, said at the time.

The world longevity record, he noted, remained with French woman Jeanne Calment, who died at 122 in 1997, having outlived both her daughter and grandson.

"From a strictly medical and scientific point of view", Bava told AP, "she can be considered a phenomenon".

Ms Morano went on to support herself by working in a factory making jute bags, then at a hotel, working far beyond the usual retirement age.

It was a regime she took up as a young woman, after the doctor diagnosed her with anaemia shortly after World War I. 'She was always very decisive'.

But it was also down to a rather unusual diet of three eggs - two raw - each day for more than 90 years.
